STUFF VS THE VIRTUAL WORLD
Okay, it’s widely known, and I’m happy to admit, that I’m a Luddite in a virtual world. I record appointments in a fake-leather date book. I have an Iphone 4S, but I don’t know how to download apps, and I prefer to memorize my friends’ phone numbers to recording them in Contacts. My Macbook Air is stomping its little feet with impatience to help me do lots of things I barely understand. I still subscribe to the hard-copy version of my favorite magazines, despite the prick of conscience about felling more trees.
I also produce artworks and design objects that remain stubbornly rooted in the material world. I like stuff I can touch, hold in my hands. And I like stuff I can create with my hands, not a keyboard.
It worries me now and then that this is just one more way in which I am unique, different from all of the rest of you humans. But I don’t worry too much because I always come back to the fact that we are all living in material bodies. We are not just eyes and text-ready fingertips. We need our stuff, and we can take great pleasure in surrounding ourselves with things that are useful, beautiful, meaningful.
That’s what inspires me to design the items featured on my website. Whether a collage, a site-specific installation, or a functional item (beach towel, water bottle, sun or rain umbrella, carpet), I want to surround you with things that intrigue you, brighten your home and workplace, replace unconscious clutter with eye-catchers. Maybe even remind you to immerse yourself in the beauty of this physical world. Our time here is limited. Let it be quality time!
